MaKenna woke me up at 2 am the other night. She was signing to me and I didn't understand what she was signing. At 2 am I really didn't try to understand much either! I thought she was signing something about the cat. But I looked around, didn't see the cat, and just tried to figure out what she was signing while trying to relax her back to sleep.
MaKenna was never upset that I didn't understand her sign, she just would try to sign every few minutes while I was holding her. Finally she motioned for me to put her back in her crib. All of the sudden I asked her, "Are you thirsty for water." Her happy grunt let me know that she was now being understood! It was so great to be able to get her some water and to send her to bed with a spill proof cup of water. She was so excited whenever I said water to her. She pointed at her cup and then would lay her head down to go back to bed.
It took me awhile to fall back to sleep as I was so happy that my daughter and I communicated. I felt so blessed that God gave her the tools and (eventually) me the wisdom to communicate with each other. Even at 2 am!
Here is a video of MaKenna signing "bird" to her brother Zane as he reads to her. MaKenna enjoys learning sign language and I enjoy being able to communicate with her!

What a great story! Some of my most incredible moments of bonding and some of my worst behavior as a mother have occured at those 2 am times.
